Story About: A cop’s search for a missing teenage girl leads her to the depraved world of child trafficking. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game between the fearless cop and a ruthless mafia kingpin.‘ Mardaani ‘ is a film about a woman standing against the tide to fight for women rights in the country. Senior Inspector Shivani Shivaji Rao is out on a mission to rescue a girl who has been kidnapped by a mafia and put into human trafficking. Gradually, she finds herself sinking deeper into the mafia network that sprawls across the whole city. Walt, the mafia threatens Shivani but there is no way she is backing out. In fact she takes it as a challenge to put Walk behind the bars within a month – 30 days. Pradeep Sarkar does a fairly good job with the film. With a subject as strong as human trafficking, the film lives up to the expectations of a hard hitting piece of cinema, well, almost. He takes a different approach in the film, unlike his previous works. And that’s why the film has a fresh feel to it.
But, there are flaws that can not be ignored. The plot kicks off on a promising note, but as the film enters the second half, the story line takes predictable turns and the climax seems a little hard to believe. Things are made just too easy for the protagonist at times, very conveniently. The editing is superb and helps keep up the pace of the film. The cinematography is completely in sync with the overall feel of the film. The message is strong too. Ignore the above mentioned flaws and the film is almost brilliant. Rani Mukerji proves yet again that she can give most A-listers today a run for their money. She’s fierce, fearless and ‘ Mardaani ‘. She carries the whole film on her shoulders alone. She knows how to hold the camera with just her eyes. The real problem lies with the script. It is a mix of some innovative and applause worthy dialogues and some overly dramatic ones that don’t even sound half as convincing. But we’ve got to admit that Rani delivers each one of them with equal panache. Tahir Bhasin as the mafia is marvellous. In contrast to the usual beefed up villains of Bollywood, he is a normal looking guy, with a below average build. But he more than compensates with his performance. Mona Ambegaonkar and other character artistes also pull off praise worthy performances. It is a mix of some innovative and applause worthy dialogues and some overly dramatic ones that don’t even sound half as convincing.
